The Civic Engagement Initiative is a collaborative Network of organizational representatives and individuals who are working to achieve increased civic engagement. Participants believe that public involvement in our communities is vital, and are interested in learning about, promoting and collaborating to work on effective civic engagement strategies.

In addition, the Network has an advisory group, The Working Group, which is made up of Network participants who meet periodically to guide the Initiative toward its goals. The Working Group helps to plan Network meetings so that they meet the needs of Network participants, identifies areas of possible work, and acts as a sounding board for new ideas.

The CEI Network also publishes a monthly newsletter, "Walking the Talk," and maintains an electronic listserv which members are welcome to join.

Civic Engagement Network meetings occur 4-6 times a year and are open to any interested individuals. Meetings are structured by two components:i

  1. Information Sharing: which allows participants to share their experiences and challenges, ask for help, and provide information; and
  2. Spotlight Topic: which focuses on specific technique or strategy or question that will be helpful to participants as they try to engage more people in the life of the community.

Past Topics Include:

  • Young Adults and Civic Engagement
  • Social Capital and the Social Capital Report
  • Online Dialogue and Communities
  • Welcoming and Engaging New Members
  • Policy-Makers Talk About Civic Engagement
  • Linking Deliberative Dialogue and Policy-Makers
  • Connecting Dialogue Theories and Practice
  • Dialogue and Community Change
