. Carlmont High Peer Mediators have plenty to celebrate.
This was the theme of PCRC’s annual event for San Mateo County middle and high school Peer Mediators. The April 6 lunch drew over 100 Peer Mediators from Carlmont, Woodside and El Camino High Schools as well as middle school students from Cunha, Hoover, Kennedy, Notre Dame, Ocean Shore, Pollicita, and Tierra Linda. It was a celebration of the work these students do to build respect and empathy at their schools through mediation. The highlight of the lunch was the student speakers sharing their experiences as mediators and what being a mediator has meant to them personally. Thank you to the Peninsula Community Foundation and California Catering for supporting this event. Program Update Through a strategic planning process and internal assessment, PCRC staff has been exploring new directions for our Schools Program. As PCRC has broadened its focus from conflict resolution to community building, so should the schools program. We also want to ensure that the services offered to schools assist with their goal of providing all students with the opportunity to achieve academic excellence. To this end, we are developing a program that “promotes student learning by building caring and collaborative school communities.” We will package the wide array of PCRC services (mediation, facilitation, dialogue, strengthening parent involvement, and training) and work more intensively with our schools. Please look for continuing updates on the expansion of our Schools Program or contact Alicia Santamaría, Schools Director. |
