Empowering Youth

This resource on our campus is invaluable and we appreciate the partnership that continues to emerge for the bettering of our school community.– Shamar Shanks, Principal Capuchino High School

Partner with my school to empower youth

PCRC teaches youth the tools to manage conflict. For over 20 years, our services have empowered youth to think critically, communicate effectively, interact without violence, and express themselves creatively. Youth actively participate in a powerful process to resolve problems peacefully rather than resorting to violence. Our approach succeeds because we partner with other resource agencies focused on youth in the areas of prevention, intervention, and re-entry.

By teaching youth to manage conflicts, PCRC’s Empowering Youth Initiative helps to accomplish the following:

  1. Academically eligible to pursue a 2 or 4-year college degree upon completion of high school
  2. Prepared to enter the workforce upon completion of high school
  3. Responsible family members
  4. Positive role models in the community

PREVENTION:

PCRC partners with San Mateo County K-12 schools to prevent youth and school violence. We work with school administrators, teachers, families, and youth to develop empathy and respect and improve communication skills. Using a whole-school training approach, we help students build social and emotional skills. As a result, youth and adults are able to effectively manage conflicts as they arise. To apply for training in your school or organization, please tell us more about you here or call 650.513.0330 x317 to speak with our Training Specialist.

INTERVENTION:

As youth grow older and encounter negative influences, our intervention efforts are designed to counter these social pressures. Our culturally relevant curriculum includes conflict resolution, public speaking skills, and social justice awareness. Our group and individual services encourage youth to utilize language and art to express their challenges and frustrations. Youth then connect these skills to other efforts around health and community violence prevention. By giving back to the community, they understand themselves as part of a bigger entity. We believe leadership comes in different forms and all youth have the potential to lead. We help youth think critically and learn how to use non-adversarial strategies to create change in their community. Learn how to partner with us and have a program at your school.

REENTRY:

It is never too late to shape a better future. PCRC partners with the San Mateo County Juvenile Probation facility, youth, and their families to reduce relapse into criminal behavior once released. Youth and their families work with PCRC to learn short and long-term conflict management skills and develop action plans. Combined, our individual, group, and family services address and reduce youth recidivism, highlight youth potential, and support family involvement and connectedness.
